Group Leader: JJ Soriano

Time Commitment: ~90 min/week reading + 6 weekly sessions

Meeting Time: Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 PM (starting Oct. 21st) OR Fridays, 6:30–8:00 PM (starting Oct. 22nd)

Cost: $25 (to cover the cost of the book) or FREE (if you buy your own book)

**We don't want cost to be a barrier to participation in this group. If it is, please reach out to the group leader and we'll make arrangements for you. Your request will be kept confidential.**

Description: In this Learning Circle, we will set aside a time and place to listen, learn, and start a conversation about Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations, the Indian Residential School system, reconciliation, and our role as a church. Each session will include story, history, and Scripture. Part of the commitment to this group will be to read the novel Indian Horse over the course of the 6 weeks; JJ will also provide additional resources/articles/links to information as the learning unfolds.

Everyone will be encouraged to share their questions, thoughts, and experience as we study and reflect on the material. Over the course of our sessions together, participants will also work on writing their personal Land Acknowledgement, which they are encouraged to share in the final session.

Our hope is that, coming out of this Learning Circle, we will be able to dream together about ways that we might get involved in taking action towards reconcilation as individuals and as a community of faith.

Schedule:

  • This Learning Circle will have two groups -- participants could choose either Thursday or Friday
  • First session on Oct. 21st/22nd at 6:30 PM via Zoom;
  • Weekly Thursday/Friday sessions (6:30 PM), ending Nov. 25th/26th;
  • We'll remain on Zoom for the duration of this Learning Circle (unless COVID-19 masking and distancing protocols change significantly).
